Also JFong if you look under the Traffic Enforcement it says MHTN PED -- Manhattan Parking Enforcement District...so it's a fancy meter maid car. But boy do they get pissed when you call them that, they prefer the "Traffic Enforcement Agent" thing, but anything is better than Brownie (because of their former brown uniforms)

Thanks for the info James. Basically it seems the meter maids are civilians with not a whole lot of power. Most meter maids I've seen are called "parking enforcement" (same thing as meter maid) and are a separate dept from the PD.

Out on the East Coast it seems that Auxiliary is the term of choice for volunteer civilian officers. Some places have more training and authority then others, but our Reserve Officers tend to be fully-sworn officers who volunteer their time.



Most states allow you to put yourself through the academy without a sponser (OH, PA for example) and then you are on your own to get a job. So many guys & gals get paid a $1 (to be covered by the liability insurance as being an "employee") and work for a small town/village/township to get more experience and make themselves a more attractive hire for a posh suburb job. For the small town it allows them to have a greater police force (or some cases a police force period)

New SCUBA Unit



Hello All



A co-worker just returned from a few days in NYC and reported to me that he saw a truck marked SCUBA Unit and it looked like it was on an International chassis with a full box with windows and a fold down canopy on the passenger side.



Checked my list and I don't see anything. Anybody know of this rig, where housed and

a photo?

Frank, ask and you shall recieve. I saw it during a trip in October. It was at the Police Academy on 21 or 22nd Street. It was Police Family Day. I shot that truck and then went around the corner and shot Truck 1.



The pic is on my site. www.pbase.com/emergencyservicepics It is either in the NYPD section or the events section with the NYC trip page. I will upload the actual photo here in the next 12 hours. I didn't think to look for a builder plate on it. I would have figured it to be a Salisbury/E-One, but I could be wrong.

The SCUBA truck looks like 1/2 rescue truck 1/2 command unit. Definitely a different looking piece.

So, I got some lousy shots around my office with my cell phone, but most are of vehicles you dont see too often.



First up - NYPD Highway Dodge Charger (V8) & CV sporting new rear-facing blue lights. IIRC NY legislature passed a bill a few years ago allowing rear-facing blue lights on PD vehicles after a Trooper was killed as studies have shown that blue is more effective warning color at night.

Next an unknown truck always parked near my office during the morning rush. It then leaves. The high rise bars are always extended and the two metal boxes mounted on the bed extend up a few feet. If I was to venture a guess I would say its an NBC detection vehicle, but who knows. Saw a piece on the news... this is a Radiation Detection Unit. It can help locate and identify vehicles or locations of Treats.
