Last I heard this truck was headed down to Greenwood for a "stem to stern" referb so that we have a decent spare for the pool. On Monday March 10 Ladder 28's spare had to be taken OOS for energency repairs, repairs that wouldn't be done until Tuesday morning by Arcand Spring of Allston. Unfortunately, at that point and time EVERY SPARE TRUCK IN THE CITY was in front line service. So from 1800hrs Monday until 1300hrs Tuesday Ladder Company 28 was taken out of service. Two members were detailed across the floor to Engine 48 making them 1 & 5, and the other two were detailed to Ladder 16 & Ladder 25 making them 1 & 4 each! Look on the map and see how far it is from L25 to L28. I just shake my head at the absurdity of it all...........

Is Boston currently experiencing a budget emergency or is the FD lower on the pecking list for more funding? I recall seeing several new ladders being delivered so maybe that would have freed some more rigs to become spares. Guess that wasn't the case?

Yea its a good ride and i was curious why they didnt have say ladder 29 cover them for the night, which might seem like a pain, but like you say if you ever had anything decent down 28s first due and say ladder 16 was on a medical or other call they would have been waiting for a truck...all and all it is crazy

Why would you take a ladder out of an area with a higher fire load, and consequently, a higher likelihood of being first or second due to a fire to cover an area with a lower fire load? While Ladder 28 being OOS is definitely an issue, juggling your companies in order to play percentages is never a smart move. What I don't understand is why Boston just didn't contact another MetroFire community and borrow a spare truck for a few days a la the Medford Tower Ladder example a few years ago.

I wish anyone would take notice when we have a ladder closed in my city.

I understand its a farce to have all 8 reserve trucks in service, but we don't even have or need a reserve truck. We close the perfectly good working ones. Tell Boston to call Lowell next time, I can gurantee we'll have a truck available, probably an engine too.

The exchange "343" as part of the department's phone number is eerily fitting...
