Memphis Fire Dept
They all provide the same duties on a working fire, Manpower, RIT, basically just whatever the Chief needs at the time.

Rescue 2 or Rescue 3 maybe special call as a additional Rescue for their snorkel to be used as well. Such as in a small alley or so.

All Memphis Rescue's are capable of HazMat, High-Angle, Trench, Confined Space, Heavy Lifting, Extrication, Water Rescue.

If ive mentioned anything wrong, one of you Rescue boys correct me.
I know that your Rescue's do Hazmat but I assume that's in a support capacity. Who runs the Real Haz Mat Units in Memphis? When I say "Real" I mean the large Haz Mat Vans that carry the neutralizing and toxic substance identification equipment. Are those Units provided by another Department as I have never seen mentioned on your site anything about Haz Mat rigs that most Fire Departments operate.Firepost.

If I recall correctly the squads handle HAZ MAT calls
Kramer, something we both failed to mention about the Rescue's and once again correct me if im wrong.

On certain calls such as Water Rescue, High Angle, Heavy Lifting, Confined Space, Major Extrication, or special situations. Any of the SORT Engines (E25 E27 E36) along with a SORT Unit (U24 U22 U17) will be sent as well. The location of the call determines which SORT Eng and Unit responds, also a SORT Chief will repond as well.

The SORT house for SE portion of Memphis and close vicinities houses Engine 25 Rescue 1 and Unit 24

The SORT house for SW portion of Memphis and close vicinities houses Engine 36 Rescue 2 and Unit 17

The SORT House for the N portion of Memphis and close vicinities houses Engine 27 Rescue 3 and Unit 22
What does's SORT stand for "Special Operations Response Team"?

Is the Sort Chief a Specially designated Chief that only goes on SORT incidents or is he one of your Battalion Chief's assigned to one of your 13 regular Battalions?

My mistake, I was told the Squads run haz mat calls. If i remember KevinL has posted 2 to 3 incidents in the Fire Scene section and i asked about haz mat response so he would know more
Kevin, thats just about dead on. Each Rescue covers their 3rd of the city. Currently they are dispatched on the initial alarm for any fire which recieves multiple calls. If multiple calls are not received, a rescue is started if a first arriving company reports working fire conditions.

Additionally, an extra rescue is dispatched on a all multiple alarm fires, but not more than 2 at any single incident. The fire pictured was a hi-rise fire on Union Ave (I think). Rescue 2 made it on the 1st alarm, rescue 3 on the 2nd.

Confined Space rescues will get all 3 because of the number of CS technicians needed on the scene to be OSHA complaint.

Thats about it. Any rescue can be special called by any incident commander at any time on any scene. Rescue's 3 and 1 recently worked for nearly 1 1/2 hours extricating two police officers after they wrapped their car around a tree at high speed.
Don't any of your Truck Company's carry extrication gear such as Hurst or Holmatro tools or is that gear only carried on your Rescue Company's.Now days most Fire Departments have at least some Truck company's equipped with Hydraulic Extrication devices.

I'm from Chicago " the birth place of the Snorkel and the Snorkel Squad" and even though we still dispatch a Squad on a "Pin in accident" all of our Trucks have had Hurst Tools on them since 2002.Before 2002 a little less then half of our Trucks had Hurst tools on board and the rest of then had Boss tool's (an Air operated extrication device) smaller then a Hurst Tool.

One of the disadvantages of Chicago is that while all of our Trucks now have Hurst Tools none of them have any Airbags (as of the last time that I heard) which means that if we need Airbags or any other more sophisticated device we still have to wait for the Squad to arrive.I know that in Milwaukee and in Houston they have "designated" Extrication Truck Company's that have Airbags and Wizzer Saws plus the Hydrualic Spreaders as well.

New York City is very lucky as all 143 of their Ladder Company's now have Airbags as well as Hurst Tools not to mention their 5 Rescue Company's and 7 Squad Company's.New York's Police Department also has that equipment on their Emergency Services Trucks which number some where between 40 and 50 units as well. Hi.I'm Glad that you mentioned that you are from LA City.I happen to find the LA City Fire Department quite facinating. In fact I'm very interested in the History of the LAFD especially some of it's Fire Company's.One reason why I find the LAFD interesting is that is pretty close in size to the Chicago Fire Department and that LAFD has had a CLASS 1 Rating for a long time now.I understand that the LAFD has had a Class 1 rating since the late 1940's.

By the way the Lafd has 49 Truck Company's which includes Ladder 9 the only single piece Truck and Light Force's 28 and 102 that don't have Engine company's stationed with them. I'll continue this via private message as this is getting off of the topic however. Thanks Firepost.

Might I direct you over to the LAFD forums http://lafirephotos.com/phpBB/ Now Lets go back to the MEMPHIS FIRE DEPARTMENT and await KevinL or other Memphis members to answer the many question

I will answer the questions that I remember from the post..

Each Rescue trucks carries several different monitors(ITX, ADP 2000, Bicron 2000, Drager chips, Multi-rae)

Rescue 1 carries a HAZMAT ID(Infrared Spectroscopy) machine. Our local EMA carries one also.

We dont have a dedicated company to run all calls.

Battalion 5 is currently the SORT B/C, he is part of the 13 Suppression Chiefs. He runs his normal territory calls and runs all Hazmat and Special Ops calls. Our Divison Chief of SORT is an 8 hour chief who is over SORT and a liaison between the MFD and the Airport authority. We have a Deputy Chief of SORT who is over SORT, airport, training center, TNTF-1 (FEMA USaR team) and alarm office.

We are currently trying to place some other BCs in the field .....

SORT stands for Special Operations Rescue Team

All of our truck companies carry rescue tools. Some of them have rams. All three rescue trucks carry resuce tools, set of rams, and complete set of air bags.

Rescue 1 runs out of the 25s with Engine 25 and Unit 24

Rescue 2 runs out of the 36s with Engine 36 and Unit 17

Rescue 3 runs out of the 27s with Engine 27 and Unit 22

Each engine company is ALS and SORT qualified personnel assigned to it.
Im curious on what happened to T16 and how the training center got the fly section of an aerial as a decoration
T16 was going on an apartment fire. While going through the complex, made a turn and hit the side of an apartment building with the platform. The section of ladder at CATC was donated to MFD when we built the new training center.

To answer the other question, yes all 26 or 27 of our truck companies are equipped with some form of extrication equipment. Some older trucks may still have Hurst. The rest have Amkus or Holmatro. The rescue trucks just have more of it.

Trucks basically carry a spreader and cutter, a few of them may have a ram or two and one power unit. The rescue companies carry multiple power units, different size spreaders, cutter, combi-tools, air bags, the works.

As far as a dedicated Hazmat vehicle, there is not one. Basic hazmat calls get an engine, a rescue, 1 B/C, and B/C 5.

A full blown hazmat response could initially get a full commercial assignment, a rescue, light water 1, 2 B/C's, B/C 5 (sort) and a Division Chief and go from there.
