I found this old Blackstone truck at the town's maintenance yard. Information I have is a 1976 Dodge 500/Local 250/1250.

When entering Blackstone, there are a variety of signs for Fort Pickett, a U.S. Army training installation. The Army, Army National Guard, U.S. Marshal's Service, FBI, ATF, VA State Police, etc. all use Fort Pickett for training. In addition, FEMA has a presence at this base.



When I finished photographing the apparatus at Blackstone, I asked the guys about Fort Pickett and it turns out that one of them is a firefighter at the base. A quick phone call set up the approval to visit the Fort Pickett fire station.



Their is a rainbow of fire apparatus colors at Fort Pickett, which I found interesting.



First up is Medic 12-2, a new 2008 Ford F450/Wheeled Coach that was recently placed into service. Fort Pickett operates two similar Ford F450/Wheeled Coaches. Medic 12, a 2007 model, is kept in reserve status at the fire department's storage building. If you are a lime lover, you gotta love the stripes on Medic 12-2.

This was a first for me.....I had to use a ladder to photograph a fire truck.



Taylor Goodman - you might recall our conversations we had about the need at times for a small ladder when photographing fire apparatus. I never felt the need....until I wanted to get photos of Engine 12. When the engine was set up for photos, I would have had some nice ones showing a good part of the under carriage looking up. This one is tall, and combine that with the slope of the road behind the station, I was having some problems.



I just flat out asked the guys if I could borrow a small step ladder, and sure enough, one was readily available. It really allowed me to get a better angle on the photos. Crash 12 from Fort Pickett had recently returned from a rehab.....in a different color.



The Army had the truck rehabed by Crash Recue Equipment Service in Dallas, Texas. One small problem occurred, it left painted lime and returned red and white. The color change was not suppose to happen (as I was told). The decision was made to keep it in its new colors of red and white.

And to add more color to the Fort Pickett apparatus colors, Utility 12 is white with blue stripes and is a 2003 Chevrolet Pick Up.

A second fire department facility is located at Fort Pickett, but it is used for storage. As I mentioned, one of the Ford F450 medic units is kept here. In addition, the department's reserve engine is also housed here.

Fort Pickett has just taken delivery of a Ford F pick up truck and a foam trailer, both painted brown, unmarked, and not yet in service. It was unknown how long it would take to place this truck in service, and for that matter - what color it will be.

From Fort Pickett I continued to make my way to the Lynchburg area and came across Crewe, Virginia. The size of the station and number of apparatus had me drooling. The problem....closed up tight.



I went to the local tire shop hoping I could find some help. A Sheriff deputy was there and provided me the dispatchers phone number to call to see if the Chief of Crewe could be raised. Although I was able to speak to the Chief, he did not know of anyone able to make it to the station to pull out apparatus. Although disappointed, I began to leave and then noticed two cars sitting out back of the station that were not there previously. It turns out both just arrived and were members and drivers....perfect!



Crewe is also located in Nottoway County.



Althouth marked "Attack 1", this truck's radio designation is actually Engine 1.
