Maybe I lost track here, but does anyone know anything about a BRAND NEW Quint 1? I know there was a Quint 36 identical to this delivered a couple months back, did they change it to Quint 1?
As far as I knew, they only took delivery of 1 Pierce Quantum Quint, and 1 Velocity Quint, and that's all they had on order. Seth Granville

Will this is new to me. I also don't know what the story is behide this is either? I'll ask around and see what I can find out.

I can;t believe they slipped one by you guys as ya'll do a good job of staying on stop of pending orders and deliveries. Maybe a last minute add on and built behnd the others. Or did AFD change their mind about wanting the Velocity chassis. Good catch though none the less.

They still have the Velocity and the Quantum. Seth Granville

I think AFD switch Quint 36 to Quint 1 and the current Ladder 1 will be move to Ladder 36. Unless AFD has other plains for Ladder 1.
Yes AFD still has the Velocity and the Quantum
Here's one of the Haz-Mat trailers stationed at 28's. It's either towed by Engine 28 or Rescue 28.
I know its been explained before, I got to ask again...what is the difference in the AFD between a Ladder Co. and a Quint Co. if they both operate quints? It was staffing but that has been changed with Quint Co.'s going to 4 man staffing.
So what is the difference? How they are dispatched, single houses, etc.? Thanks in advance.

Ok I've got some info on Quint 1. Quint 35 & Ladder 1 are switching where Quint 35 will become Quint 1 and Ladder 1 will become Ladder 35.
I also told that there is new quint on order. I'm not sure when it will be deliveried or where it's going to be assigned.

Up until 2006 there were ladder companies staffed with 3 and quints staffed with 6. The City of Austin has 13 aerial devices in frontline service with I believe 5 reserve pieces. In 2006 3 were considered "quints" stationed by themselves and expected to do first in engine and truck work in their own still district and to be an aerial device or engine when responding as 2nd due. In 2007 the desicion was made by the higher ups at AFD to purchase "wet ladders" i.e. 1500-2000 gpm pump minimal hose and minimal water tank 100 -200 gal. That idea was scratched and now every aerial device being purchased by the city will be an NFPA standard quint. All aerial devices effective earlier this year have gone to staffing of four instead of the 3 on a ladder and 6 on a quint. If you listen to afd radio traffic you will still hear vehicles being referred to as "ladders" these are the true no pump having aerial devices. These are at Ladder 3, Ladder 8, one of two aerial platforms, Ladder 15, Ladder 18 until the velocity goes into service, Ladder 31 and now i guess the other aerial platform will be at 36's. The three quints that are stationed alone are Quint 19, 27, and 38. The newer quantums purchased since 07 are at 1, 17, 35, and 40. These newer devices are all housed with engines with the new and improved Quint 1 being housed with 2 engines downtown at central station. Now here is the tricky part.... If one of the single house quints 19, 27, or 38 have to go out of service for repair one of the other in service quints that are housed with engines has to give their vehicle to the quint that is housed alone. This is because the reserve aerial pieces do not have pumps. Which is why you could see "quint" 17s 06 Dash at station 38 acting as quint 38 for a month and a half earlier this year when something went bad on 38s '03 Quantum. Confused yet? As an Aside I would not be surprised to see that next quint ordered be an aerial platform to go back to Q... Ladder.... Confusing, but well presented and thanks for the info! I agree, I think that we'll see a new Quint TL for L-1. Also, I wish the department would try Seagrave again. Liven things up a bit for us buffs, etc. But, I wonder if they will like the Velocity, and maybe make the switch from the Quantum? But, I guess they like the interior cab room and exit stairs. OK, so to summarize...
All AFD rigs with an aerial on top but no pumper are called "Ladder" and ride with 4, previously with 3. All AFD rigs with an aerial on top and with a pump are called "Quint" and ride with 4, previously with 6. Thanks for the information. What do the Engine Co.'s, Rescue Co.'s, Battalion Chiefs and Deputy Chiefs ride with? Thanks in advance.

Witch means AFD doesn't need to ship there trucks off for major repairs. The only reason AFD ships trucks off to Siddons is for warranty repair. All major repairs are generally done at the Austin FD shops on Hargrave St. Pierce has a stronghold on the Austin market right now, but as Austin grows, there are other manufacturers who are begining to take notice. There have been some issues with Pierce on this latest batch of deliveries. I wouldn't be suprised to see E\-One or Crimson try to take a bite at the 5 budgeted pieces for next year. Also, the Quantums Austin gets are really "stripped down" on the interior in order to meet the price point required to get the bid, and to meet spec. Austin FD prefers the Quantums because of the roomy cab and easy entrance/exit via the hydraulic steps (there are some more reasons). At this time, none of the major manufacturers can really match that. Seth Granville

My home town Arlington, Tx lost all of it's real trucks now all Quints at the five Trucks. The old Snorkle, Seagrave , Lafrance, and E\-One Trucks in Arlington were great. Sad state of affairs. We have the same problem in Kansas City only all ladders but five are Quint 95ft Towers. Four Tiller and one 100ft Quint Ladder. It sucks maybe at some point everyone will return to the right Truck no water or pump. The Truck Co.'s in KCFD want dry Tiller Trucks back. Oh well only my feelings.
