I hesitate to jump in here, but I think it is important to qualify the description of a "real" truck....ultimately, the best system is engines that do engine work, and trucks that do vent and rescue work. That system works great if- and its a big if these days with cities having difficult financial times- there are enough engines to back up the truck with a hoseline. If your backup isnt too far away, if the engine isnt out doing a medical run, etc then a straight forward aerial or bucket without a pump works great. It gives lots of room for equipment and ladders, is easier to maintain without the added electronics of the pump.



BUT...if your back up is too far away or the engine does a hell of a lot of medicals or nuisance calls, some depts have opted to put a pump on their trucks. It doesnt make them stupid, it doesnt make their truck less of a truck, and it might even be serving their citizens well. I remember having a beer with a truck company "lou" out of FDNY who was telling me of a girl trapped in a fire and the engine was delayed. They had no water and couldnt get past the fire to get to her. He said the screaming of her burning was his most painful memory. Would having a pump on his truck made a difference? maybe not, but it is is a point to ponder. If it was your kid that was trapped, is a pump on a truck such a bad idea?



I know we cant trust the damn politicians not to close companies to save money, and I if there is no pump on the ladders it makes it harder for them to close a company to save some overtime.



I guess my point is that life isnt black and white, and we need to realise that not every dept has the same resources or manpower. I long for the old days of lots of rigs and lots of manpower. Until those days return, I accept that sometimes, grudgingly, I may have to accept some changes that I dont like.

No need to be hesitant about jumping in. I believe he was being fastidious, but I could be wrong. Also, he does have a point about a "real truck" not having a pump. A truck with a pump is a Quint. Also, he was speaking in terms as it relates to us here in Boston. We currently operate 34 Engines, 18 Ladders, 3 Towers and 2 Rescues covering 47.3 square miles and serving a permanent population of 575,000 making Quints for all intents and purposes, unnecessary.

to take this a step further...everyone knows we are ALL having man power issues...having a quint in my opinion isnt worth it unless its a single truck house and the next due pump is far away. with a quint you need 6 to 7 members on the truck to function as a true quint...but with manpower the way it is (having 3 maybe 4 people on a rig) having a quint just doesnt make sense...plus truckies hate QUINTS lol...again my opinion...

Picture the scaled-down cabinetry of a BFD Rescue Company, fit into this vehicle that's used to augment a Tech Rescue Engine or Ladder Co.



This piece has been in use since DNC '04.

A great example of what happens when the people who will be using a rig are given no input on the specs.

Anyone know the name of the font that the BFD used to use on their rigs? I always liked it and its a shame to see them go away from it.

How is Boston making out with the "newer" style E\-One stix ? Are they performing up to expectations of the old ones ?

From what I've heard, yes. We have 5 in service now and the boys rave about the space in the back. The chauffeur and officer are now separated by the engine and the back is wide open. I worked on Ladder 1 and Ladder 2 within the last few months and I have to say I would LOVE to have one for our house!

I'm not really a fan of E\-One, but the tandem axle aerials look real nice. How you boys making out with the rest of the fleet? Heard and seen some of the front line pumps running around with the brush trucks. How many rigs got "red-tagged" following the tragic accident recently. Just curious, Thanks in advance.

Quite a few. Believe both Brush Trucks are now out of frontline service. Ladder 25 is using ST16 (Spare Truck 16) for long-term and Ladder 26 has ST28. Tower Ladder 3 is running a straight stick spare and Ladder 21 has a spare as well. I believe 3 has ST9 and 21 has ST29, which is an open-cab.
