i don't recall seeing anyone else ask this. the Seagrave engines have been around long enough to where they're being replaced by new engines so what's been going on with the engines being replaced? did losing the engines on 9/11 plus apparatus accidents etc put them down so many that they've been keeping them & reassigning them or possibly canabalising them for in-service engines? i haven't seen any popping up refurbed at other depts.

I would have to say that 9/11 made a significant blow to the FDNYs fleet, which the majority was Seagrave, and the reserves were older Seagraves and the good ol Macks.



I also think that while FDNY has the new units on order they don't have a choice but put the older ones on the street, they, like the rest of us have a job to do and need to be able to provide the service. As the new units arrive and are placed in a house I'm sure the Spare goes back to the yard,shop or another house.

The first Seagrave engines to be purchased by FDNY were the 1992's, followed by a batch of '93's. Besides one or two of the '92's or 93's being cannibalized to make a spare squad, or perhaps wrecked in an accident, the rest are all spares. Very shortly you will be seeing some of the '92's and '93's being scrapped by the city when the first batch of new Marauders are put into service replacing the '97's and '98's (which will in turn become the new spares).

Does FDNY replace their front line apparatus every 10 years or so? Also when the new engines arrive are the 1997-1998 engines going to be reserves?
People complaining about spam in the spam mail box... Huh, what'll they think of next?

Yes. Engines, along with ladders and tower ladders, are "Supposed" to be replaced every 10 years. As far as the '97 and '98's go, they will probably all become spares, with maybe a few becoming fully equipped reserves.

With a large fleet such a FDNY they would most likely keep many of their older engines as spares, some to the training academy or use them for reserve engines (at last count, there were 20 or so). Others have been turned into spare squads.

When 88 got the FIRST Seagrave rig back in 92 it was at the NJ State Convention.... When 88 gets their first 2000 GPM its there again.

thanks for the help guys. over the years this board has been the place to go with questions. are the '92s so used up they're going to be scraped or will they be wholesaled out or auctioned off? since the FDNY began buying Seagrave engines i've been waiting to see what other depts do with them in a 2nd "life" after being refurbed. they should be every bit as interesting & productive as some of the CF's were in their new homes. it could also bring seagraves to depts that previously could have only afforded "low bid" commercial machines, refurbs that were garbage to begin with or worse.

Indeed. There are many refurbished Aerialscopes running around the PA, MA and other eastern states.

Info from some other forums that may answer a few questions that have been asked lately:



Supposedly all 5 rescues are being replaced and the brand new Pierce is being moved to reserve. Don't ask me why.



The front bar lights are Federal Signal combinations of LED and rotator. The rear warning lights are Whelen. According to the other site, they wanted to keep some LED's but also wanted the rotator effect to reflect and bounce off the buildings - especially in Manhattan. LED's are bright as you look at them, but they actually do not produce a single, focused, powerful beam. Evidently that beam dancing around on the buildings gives people at intersections some kind of clue to their approach. Personally I would have stuck with the LED's in the lower zones and gone will an all rotator bar, but they didn;t call and ask my opinion!

I am not sure. I am looking for the thread now. All of that info came from some FDNY guys, I think including one of their shop guys, in the firehouse.com forums. Let you know what I come up with.
