The Pembroke rig is a 1976 ALF Spartan I. The Spartan I series used the same cab as the Pioneer III, but it was built on a less expensive Chevrolet chassis. I believe that is what Steve was referring to in his statement as well. When you see the registration number, it should begin with the letter S, whereas the Pioneers begin with P.

Hey Bruce,

Update on the '51 Mack Snorkel - I got info this past spring from a member at Newtown Square FC that the rig was taken out of service in Forest Lake and moved to a warehouse someplace in or near Binghamton, NY. Unsure of specific location and I have been unsuccessful in trying to recontact Fred Capotosto who was Asst. Chief in Forest Lake in Dec. 2006 (and son of Frank Copotosto). I'm told it is being stored inside but I don't know why it was taken out of service.



Many fond memories of that truck. I operated the rig while I was in Paoli FC from 1972 to 1983. My "biggest" fire in that time frame was the Betsy Ross Candy Company blaze in the Paoli Industrial Park. Here's a newspaper photo of the '51 that day. Sure would like to keep track of that truck and I hope it stays in one piece.

Some of you might also recognize this photo of S-36 which was used in magazine ads for Snorkel for several years. It's actually the '51 operating at a multi-alarm fire in East Whiteland Twp., PA at Vishay Electronics in the mid-70's. Snorkel liked the photo and used it even as they were selling more and more 85' units which was shown in the PIP in the ad.

In 1974 Snorkel 36 was valued at $52,000 as was shown here in one of our (Paoli FC) fund drive brochures at the time.

How ironic that a publishing company that specializes in transportation books thought that a Bruco book wouldn't be a good idea. I love Iconografix books because I'm a transportation nut. If I had the money I'd have 99% of their catalog on my bookshelf. That being said if you read their book list they've already published, what I consider, some narrow-appeal topics....such as Beverage Delivery Trucks, Car Carriers, and the best one I found in a quick perusal of their website:



Classic American Steamrollers 1871-1935 Photo Archive ......that's a broad-appeal topic??



I'm sorry...I must have missed this year's steamroller muster.....and where do I go to subscribe to American Steamroller Journal? The book about TASC is one of my favorite Iconografix-Books, as TASC turned out some of the nicest commercial-chassied rigs. I don't know, whats wrong about a Bruco-book, as Bruco was another regional builder with equally nice rigs built. Same for Howe and Oren, and a Sutphen-book is long overdue.

Wow....never even thought about those builders. But you're right....books on those builders are long overdue as well, especially Oren. I'm kind of partial to those as when I joined my local FD back in 1986 4 of our 5 apparatus were Orens, all on Duplex chassis.
