You are correct on Coulters two macks coming from Pittsburgh. Not sure on assignments though. The last time I was at Coulter they both were there. I accessed it from the White Oak area, so there must be two entrances.

The two at Central of E. Twp. were purchased new. Shaler Villa purchased one also in that time frame.

Pitcairn Fire Co.2 (Allegheny County Station 230) purchased an R-Mack from PBF which was assigned to Engine 37 back in the early 90's. It was repainted safety slime green/yellow and ran as Engine 23. You knew it was from Co. 37 since it was the only R-Mack to have a bin/tray along the hose bed to store 5 gallon buckets of foam since 37 was part of the city's HAZMAT team. They only kept it for a couple of years then sold it off at an auction in Butler County.

There are a few ways to get in there, but they are all through Westmoreland County. Even though there is no sign, you do enter Westmoreland. Its kind of a geographical screw up if you ask me

Spotted and photographed at a truck dealers lot in Duncansville, PA. about 1995-96, it wasn't there long.

There are no Macks at the fire academy anymore. I stopped a few years ago for pictures. They had the ALF engine, and Pirsch snorkel X-Avalon at the time. Unfortunately I couldn't find anybody to get pictures of the snorkel. They replaced it a year or two after that with a Pierce quint.

They ran a Brockway, Mack, and a Ford Louisville there as well. Always a short wheelbase to negotiate the narrow streets in Troy Hill.

Yes 4539 was the safety unit out of 39 house. This unit responded on all full boxes city-wide. This unit was established with the crew of 39 Engine after Bricelyn St in 1995. But due to budget cuts, when 39 was shut down along with others 2 years ago, the safety unit went too. Now, just a B.C. is dispatched as a safety officer. The squads, the last were Squads 11, 12, 24, 28 and 33. Squad 33 ran the 1st and 6th Battalions, 24 ran the South Side, 28 the West end, and 11 & 12 in the 3rd & 2nd Battalions. They were a 4 man crew and were disbanded in June 1992. Squad 11 gave Station 11 the most runs of any house in the city for a number of years.

Very classy. A nice shot. I have a few shots taken back in 1988 at the Red Bull Inn fire on Shady Ave. back in August of 1988. A couple R's working and 8 Truck, one of the beasts operating.

Ladder 68,



There are currently units in the 20 and 30 designations. At one time Pittsburgh had units in the 40, 50, & 60 designations that were front line, but they haven't been around for years.

They have/had (should still have it) aspinwalls mack CF





City of pittsburgh has 29 operational fire stations, starting at 3 and going to 38. With of course skipping a good ammount due to the citys great idea of cutting houses. 4 multi alarm fires going at the same time will drain all the citys fire resources. Most "well off" or working fires will give a 3 to 5 alarm fire, as each alarm adds 2 additional trucks or engines to the assignment. And this year they DID pull an outside company in as an air truck. Which is a rarity

I knew what you meant, but it was there when i took FF 1 which was spring of 07 ish. They probably parted with it when 102 got their new engine whatever year it was. Id say late 06 to early 07. However with the academy purchasing the truck im not sure if they sold it or still have it, havnt been there in a while.
