Also doesn't Rock Hill have a white HME with a command desk for the Captain in the jump seat area? Are they the city that went broke? Is so how have they kept their paid fire department?

Any truth to STLFD ordering Smeal pumpers and 125' H & L's. If so how many? Where are they going?

I unfortunately don't have that many details about who ran what that long ago. I do know that this reserve was from U-City, as it has the trademark lions on the front of the truck.

Is this this HME you speak of Rick?



Im not 100% sure of the severity of their money problems but I have seen that they have had finanical problems in the past. The former firehouse was torn down and they run from what looks like a barn down the street for a couple years. Where the firehouse once stood is a shopping area and more is to come to that area. I would assume and hope that there is plans to build a firehouse for the guys. There is only 10 guys for the FD.

I havent heard about Smeal getting the nod for the new trucks. I only heard city buying 2. One was to replace H&L6. And the talk was that the other new one was going to the 20's. They wanted it to go to the 12s but I dont think it fit either height wise or with the medic unit which is housed there. It won't be long til we have to replace the other 3 H&L's as well. 1 runs a bunch of fires. The other 2 ran as the 1st out engine as well because they run pumpers from their houses and the pumpers were struck out of service because of manpower. And the hook and ladders ran all the 1st in calls that the pumpers were normally booked in on, such as EMS.



There sounds to be truth that we will not run 30 quints anymore and that we will go back to running regular engines and hook and ladders.





It's just my opinion but they could try to replace several of the engine houses to consolidate equipment. i.e. run a pumper a hook and ladder, move a rescue squad here, a medic unit (be greedy and put a 2nd here too) and a chief.

I know U-City's former truck co was a white/red sutphen. It may have been a different color in its earlier years. The U-City Chief is a member on Firepics, if he sees this maybe he could answer.

Highly doubtful. I would just hope we would get Q's on the new trucks. Like I said, nothing has been etched in stone, but I did hear from a reliable source from HQ that our new trucks will be black over red.

I have to agree with GA Dave on this one. Tho I love the looks of black over red I think they need to stay the way they are now. I am also a little confused as to why everyone seems to be so against the Quints. Is it mainly a cost thing as to why they would switch back to Pumpers and Truck Co.s or is it something else?

Quints were orginally designed for small communities where and were adapted to large cities during tight budget times. Normally your three to four guys on an engine and three to four on a truck, so six or eight. Most quints run with three or four but are suposed to preform the functions of both the engine and truck. Quint people can work the numbers where it looks like advantage, but really it is not. Richmond VA comes to mind on their web site it shows Qunits as an advantage but if you break down the staffing and staffed companies it really was not advantage. You gamble that fires are down which they are nationwide. However fires burn hotter now and are faster moving, so you really do need more staffing now more than ever. It is safer having two seperate companies do the the fire ground functions of supression, vent, and search. We send the engine for suppression two officer and fireman, the Truck splits two search officer and fireman and two for vent FAO and fireman. You can save money with Quints, less staffing. However the cost of upkeep is much greater on a Quint IE weight and equipement. It was noted in a St. Louis NIOSH LODD report that a lack of truck work contrubited to the LODD a few years ago. I have seen and have experince when you place a pump on a truck your truck work suffers. The Quint starts bringing the hydrant or pumps the fire and all of a sudden your truck is out of postion or the truck crew has a hose. The standard fire ground assigments that are predetermined are now a roll of the dice at each fire. It just does not work for structural firefighting. Now pumps are great on Qunits for car fires and dumpster fire. But we still send two companies to cars and dumpsters even with our Quint for safety.



Now before everyone throws me to the meat grinder. I understand that in tough times you have to make tough decisions and Qunits are an option. However it is safer to have seperate fire ground functions and have personel trained in that speciality instead of being the swiss army knife's or jack's of all trades. This is just my thoughts and is not ment to offend anyone.
