Thanks Frank.

That looks like the 1926 Albany NY ALF WT currently on display at the NYS Museum in Albany.

Type 17 tractor, six cylinder 105 hp gas engine, chain drive. Register # 5737 on the tractor, #15 on the 65' Hale water tower, 1100 gpm on the tower, 550 gpm on each of two deck pipes, 165' vertical stream developed during acceptance testing on Nov 27, 1926. 12 2-1/2 inlet connections.

On the trailer bed is the chemical tank used for raising the tower.

50' long, 7-1/2' wide, 12' high. It was too long for the streets of Albany so it wasn't used all that much and sat unused from 1940 to 1972 when it went to the museum.

Here's a pic of what it looked like coming at you straight on.

Ok back in 1990 WHYY Channel 12 (PBS) did a show "FIRE!" on the Philly Fire Dept. I just got done watching my tape of it. I would love to see an updated show on Philly FD now. Back then the Rescue was not in service yet, the Battalions ran Suburbans with the Jaws of Life in the back. The companies would use the tools once they arrived. There were some cool shots of rigs and operations.

This is Engine 16's old 1979 American LaFrance (Philly Shop #79-5166) at their Belmont Street Station. They had a 100 or 200 series rearmount in the last time I was there. Engine 16 operated "QUINT 16" a Simon Duplex rig for a while before it was re-assigned to Quint 69 near the Airport.

Seeing Engine 16's '79 ALF engine brings back ALOT of old memories of those rigs. There's an old one sitting out back of Cherry Hill, NJ's Squad 6 firehouse on Burnt Mill Rd., along with a couple of old Cherry Hill Rigs. Supposedly one of the Fire Police members of Cherry Hill bought it from the City of Phila. for a dollar. It's in pretty rough shape though.
The only MARC in 46 ENGINE!

I got my shot one day going to the Philly Zoo. The Zoo is out near where my father lived in the 1940's. He said he would not take me back to where he grew up for MY SAFETY!? So when I got older I went out there in the day light to 52nd and Girard. I think his area was covered by Squrt 57 and Engine 16.

My grandfather drove an Ambulance out of old Engine 65's station on 54th and Haverford, before PFD took over EMS.

Did Byberry State Hospital have its own FD or did the city cover it? Don't recall ever seeing any rigs from there, but the place was huge.

Fire protection for Byberry was provided by the city. On 3/24/1937 Extra Engine 49

was organized on the grounds of the hospital. The company was solely responsible for protection of the buildings on the hospital grounds and did not respond off site. They were disbanded on 7/28/1951. Today, the box for Byberry is the only box in the city that gets five engines on the first alarm instead of the normal four. The fifth engine is a pipeline company (Pipeline 52 on the box card) that is used only for water supply.

Jack....

should this be PIPELINE 62??? I think 52's is a normal Engine Company from what I have in my notes.

No, it should be Pipeline 52. They have been a pipeline since at least 3/15/1991.

According to the Unofficial Web site of the PFD, http://www.angelfire.com/pa4/philafiredept/, the following companies are listed as pipeline companies. 3,5,6,18,19,20,28,36,40,49,50,52, and 61. That would be 13 in number.

This list doesn't contain Deluge co's. Jack, could you update us on that?
That list is about six years out of date. It's been quite some time since that site was updated. As a matter of fact, I think that the kid that put it together gave up on it. Anyway the Pipelines are 3,5,6,19,20,28,34,40,49,50,52,61,62. The deluge companies are 14,24,41,59.

Also, in a previous post there was mention of the PFD taking over EMS. EMS was never a separate entity. It has always been a part of the fire department since its inception in 1951. The ambulance service evolved from the heavy rescues and were called Auxiliary Rescues.

Attention "Fireman 5230": That is MY photo of Engine 16, taken by ME in 1989, and I have the negative to prove it. You took it off my PBase page, and I would appreciate proper credit. I guess that's what you get for not watermarking images.

What is a "Pipeline" Engine Company? How does it differ from a Regular Engine Company?
Reply
A Pipeline Company is an engine company equipped with at least 1000 ft of 5 inch LDH and a 1500 gpm pump. Philadelphia uses the designation so that incident commanders can differentiate the LDH companies from the "regular" engines.

I sent an pm to Roy. This photo was sent to me over 2 years ago. Someone emailed it to me for referance for a model. The referance I made to my shot was from another visit in 1999 of their current Frieghtliner. I am sorry for any mis-understanding and I give credit to Roy for his photo.

I kinda realized that after I posted. I went back to the site and was looking at the ladder companies, and it was still listing 4, 6, and 18 as tower ladders.

Any reason why they switched Engine's 18 and 62 as pipelines? Or did they just want a pipeline company closer to the ever growning NE?

If you guys could help clarify some things for me I would greatly appreciate it:

Engine 33 - Changed to a Foam Co.

Engine 38 - Changed to a Squrt Co.

Engine 47 - Changed to a Squad Co.

Engine 60 - Changed to a Foam Co. - Rig went to Engine 25?

Engine 65 - Disbanded Co.

Ladder 02 - Their snorkel rig went to L22 when they got rid of their tower ladder? What is L02 currently using?

Ladder 22 - Had a '98 or so ALF Eagle/LTI tiller prior to getting the KME TL. Where did that rig go?

Ladder 26 - Disbanded Co.

Pipeline 18 - Changed to Foam Co. - Their pumper went to Pipeline 62?

Pipeline 20 - Disbanded Co.

Pipeline 49 - Disbanded Co.

Quint 16 - Disbanded and reformed as traditional Engine Co. with a Freightliner pumper and with the quint going to form Quint 69?

Squrt 72 - Changed to Squad Co. - Their Squrt went to Squrt Co. 55?

Tower 04 - Changed to standard Ladder Co.

Tower 06 - Changed to standard Ladder Co.

Tower 18 - Changed to standard Ladder Co.

Tower 22 - Changed to Snorkel Co. using the rig from L02.

And finally, does anyone have a list of disbanded companies from Philadelphia?

Thanks for the help.
