Nice looking tower, it seems like atleast a mid-mount design would have been a better compromise between the crews and chiefs. Too bad the bumper space is taken up with a hose tray and not an extrication tool since they do more truck work.



I have to say that in a defensive mode it's nice to not have to dedicate an engine to pump for a tower.

Ever since the Seagrave Ladder failure in 96 the department has been very gun shy to have a mixed aerial fleet. This is due to the fact the Truck 3 was normally in a Sutphen Tower and the night of the failure they were in a 1979 Seagrave 100ft Quint. The FAO was operating the ladder wrong with about four major errors that lead to the failure. So ever since then they have been trying to standarize the fleet. On top of that the Chief wants to use the Trucks to meet NFPA 1710 instead of adding pumpers. His choice was to have a fleet of Rearmount Towers. He alos sees the resale value Tower Quints have. So you end up with a fleet of goofy Towers and four tillers and one stright stick. I with the Truck Officers would much rather see a Tillered fleet or even stright dry ladders. I believe you need at least one or two Towers in a big city but the whole fleet is a bit much. They weigh more are a little harder to maneuver, have a bigger jack spread and really dont fit KCFD Truck work.



I do agree the pump is handy on the Towers for defensive fires. Like the old Boston Tower Unit. The whole fleet but Truck 13 was E\-One so they had simliar jacking set ups and operations. Now they are adding Pierce and that was a big six month long debate because of not wanting to mix the aerial fleet. They had debated staying with E\-One just to keep the fleet standardized. However Pierce designed non-pinable outriggers for the KCFD Towers this was a requirement since the E-Ones don't have to be pinned.



Why was Truck 2 in DFD ordered as a Quint? Thanks for the info stay safe, Rick

Truck 2 serves a pretty large first due area with a delay for the next due engines They'll only pull a line on a structure fire if those engines are very far out but they have the ability if needed. I think the idea is for them to handle the average car, grass and dumpster fires on their own too. T2 is also the first due city unit to Denver International Airport - which only has one structural engine.



Here's a map I made of the DFD, you can see where 2's is placed. The closest Engines are 27 & 29.

Do you have any shots of the tiller pump panel? I see someone posted T10 above but can't see the pump panel, so maybe its inside a compartment?

Hi,



The five tillers Trucks 5,7,8,10 and Reserve Truck 2 are the last true Trucks in the KCFD they are dry no pump or tank only 100ft sticks. Much of the department would like to return real true dry trucks. It will most likely have to be in the future in another adminstration. Stay Safe, Rick



Trucks 5,7,8,10, Reserve Truck 2 are 100ft dry Tillers

Trucks 2,3,6,11,12,15 are 95ft E\-One Quints called Trucks

Truck 13 is a 100ft Sutphen called Truck

Truck 4 is a 100ft E\-One Stick Quint called Truck

Reserve Truck 1 is a 95ft E\-One Quint called Truck



Their are no Truck 1, 9, 14. Truck 14 was disbanded in the early 1980's and Tiller Trucks 1 and 9 were disbanded in 1997.



Truck 4. 15 have been reactivated in the last ten years.

If you'll notice...the ViewPoint lightbars on this rig are halogen. I won't say who, but a certain person @ Conrad messed that one up. I happened to catch it at the factory before these units were done and let him know. I think they're just going to see if KCFD wants to leave them or replace them with LED.

Yes you are correct it was a mistake. Word is they will be left with them. Both rigs are at the Fire Acadmey now. I much perfer the Halogen roof lights and LED for the rest. The Federal View Point or Vector LED's on the KCFD E-Ones are all red and set in the on off pattern it looks weird. I prefer Whelen for a LED light bars in the FDNY three mini style.

How are those tiller trucks holding up? We have 3 here in Baltimore County and are not well liked. Examples are visability in tiller cab we had issues with all three with the 5th wheel not being able to be lubricated, trailer being too heavy for the chassis and it pushes it as we make turns with it etc. We were told that they were built off KCFD specs.
