LAFD Dozer Tender. Photo by Monrovia1.[/quote]

Ok, I've gotta ask: what does a dozer tender do and what equipment does it carry?

Micah,

The Tender carries supplies & tools to operate the Dozer. The driver of this unit is called a swamper, and is a mechanic.

Hope that helps.

Is former engine 51 going into reserve and what would happen to the old yellow Seagrave?

Any ideas what is stored up in the diamond plate box over the hosebed?

Can anyone shed some light on why Los Angeles has no tower ladders or platform type rigs? Just for info <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dreurotruck.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Dreurotruck' />

Sr. Fire Official,

The diamond plate boxes are for grass & brush fire gear. Included might be small diameter hose, gated wyes etc.

Maxim,

The LAFD tried some snorkels in the late 60's & very early 70's. There was a tragic accident in 1970, when Sn3 tipped while operating, killing a FF.

Since then, LAFD has gone with TDAs. Not entirely because of the incident but also due to hilly terrain in several areas of the city. It was found that a TDA can move around a lot easier than a tower/platform.

LA Co. tried them in the mid 80s to early 90s, and found the same problems.

Also can carry the crews "out of town gear" when they are called on strike team duty. Usually the crews stash their cots, chairs and other comfort items in that box.

JFong,

Strike Team boxes are not on the rig full time. They are put on the tailboard prior to them being dispatched.
