Reading, MA MVA - 7-19-09 - IAO 398 Haverhill St.
#1
At approximately 5:42am, Reading's 911 dispatch center recieved numerous phone calls reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of 398 Haverhill St. Reports were that the vehicle was also on fire. Reading Fire HQ companies Engine 4, Ladder 1 and Paramedic 1 were dispatched to the scene under the command of C3 Captain Campbell.

Apon arrival, companies reported a single car, on fire, that had hit 2 telephone poles and a tree. There was at least 1 report of multiple occupants still in the vehicle, however those reports were false as there was only the driver who had self extricated. He was transported by Reading P1 to Lahey Clinic in Burlington to recieve treatment for injuries.

The car, as youll see, came to rest hanging over a small rock bridge which cross's over a small brook where the engine of the vehicle as well as other debris came to rest. Both telephone poles were snapped at the base and fell to the ground, one of which was cought under the van.

I was absolutely amazed that the driver, while injured, was able to pretty much walk away from this after seeing all the damage done. I arrived with the first in companies but dont have pics of the active fire in the front end (its a story for another day). The accident is still under investigation, so a cause is unknown at this point.

A shot of the engine and other debris at reat in the brook below. Believe it or not, none of the oil or transmission fluid leaked out, which none of us could believe.

Another shot of the debris. The yellow item at the bottom right is the drivers shoe. Somewhere around there were a couple dollars floating around.

The tow company lifts the van off the telephone pole as fire crews pull the pole out from underneath.

Heres the final impact zone with all of the vans missing pieces in the brook. The tow comapny lifted the engine and other debris out from the brook right after this shot.

Last one is an overall of the impact area. The far right, under the tree branches that were brought down, is the snapped off base of the telephone pole while the final impact was down the road a bit where the officer is conducting his investigation.

What amazes me is how many times have we seen fatal injuries in wrecks much less substantial than this one? This guy should go back to the brook, find his floating money, and go buy a lottery ticket.

Joe,

You probably couldnt live much closer....which is why I took it in. I was sleeping and came to when they were announcing the incident. Living so close, I arrived as the companies did but I made one BIG mistake. I didnt have the memory card in the camera when I started shooting the actual car fire (I know, I know....HUGE mistake). By the time I grabbed my spare from the car, they had it knocked down. I nearly kicked my own a** back home. But a couple of the guys made sure I didnt live it down.

I may just have to turn in my buff/photography badge....this is twice within a week that Ive gotten cought having a senior moment. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/machinegun.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Machinegun' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Banghead' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_redface.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Icon_redface' />

I cannot give you any crap for that - it has happened to me - just last night I ran out to pick up the kids from a friends house, I live in West Woburn, and they were in East Woburn and I realized that I had nothing with me - no memory cards, no credit cards and no money.

I was hoping nothing came in and I didn't get pulled over but I did want to hit Dunks and was SOL!
