When I was in Probie school in the summer of '01, there was one of these small "Bullet" trucks left out at MSU's quarters. It was just sitting there looking VERY tired and beat up.

Rig is a 2001 Spartan, and the boom is a 1973 Baker that was off of a former FDNY rig. Martinelli has all the info on this rig. It was donated to us after Sept. 11th.

the almost disbanded ladder 53 . . . Why is this ? I am not familiar with that much about the FDNY but I saw a few post ago that it is a busy company ? Is this some of the political BS you all are dealing with up there ?

I guess the politicians feel the residents on the somewhat remote City Island don't need a ladder company...

Has the community kicked up a fuss over the possible closer?

My Department was lookin at buying the Spartan. The Seagrave Rep showed it to us in late July 2001. BEFORE the town could set money aside for it - the Attack happend. We found out the rig was bought in an Emergency PO for replacement rigs. ONLY reason FDNY took it was it was a Scope. Operations were the same as all the others. As for its LOOKS - that is why it got shoved to City Island... OUT OF SIGHT - OUT OF MIND. kind of like the ALF Engine that they got just before 9-11 also now on Gov. Island.

Ladder 53 makes a very low number of actual responses (runs) due to their remote location, however percentage wise, they have a high number of actual fires (workers). So if you compare runs to workers, they are a busy company. If you look at only runs, they are rather slow.

They were gonna get disbanded on july 1 along with engines 4,271,and 161, and another 16 in january if the city council didnt step in. Ladder 53 had below 200 runs last year they did have a few fires and a couple of multiples, they do get alot of marine work as the island itself is surrounded by water and idiot drunken boaters. Since there is a draw bridge which might be open engine 70 or ladder 53 arent allowed to croos the bridge not even if the incedent is right on the otherside. Also if anyone of they is oos they get a relocator. So in short ladder 53 isnt a busy unit we were just busting chops and they were on the firing line because fdny brass figured get ride of a slow company than a busy unit(atleast thats what i thought they thought).

I know this is off topic of apparatus but I'm not very familiar with NYC, what is City Islands demographics, etc like?

One of the BIG reasons 53 Truck stayed open was because there are actual taxpaying VOTERS out there, not skells gettin' free handouts. Also, former Bronx Boro President Aldolfo Carrion (who was just given a spot in Obama's cabinet) still lives out there, heard he made a bit of a fuss too.

Besides the fact that the next due truck is TWELVE MINUTES away, without traffic..........It was pretty obvious that there would have been some civilian fatalities pretty soon after the company was closed. As it stands now, there have been several all-hands fires on the Island this year already.

The ALF was only supposed to be a proto-type rig, similar to the E\-One that was tested back in '95/'96. The job had just taken delivery of the rig a few weeks before 9-11. When the attack happened, the job purchased the rig outright. Heard from the guys in 34 Engine and others that it was a COMPLETE LEMON, and THAT'S why it was relegated to Governor's Island.

Wasn't the ALF rig moved around a bit to different stations before its final reassignment? Was it even that big of a lemon?

Does anyone know how many runs Engine 70 and Truck 53 make in a year? Just curious. Thanks.

Yes, i'm trying to remember since it's been 8 years, but I believe it was also out at 257 Engine in Brooklyn for a bit. From what I was told by the guys who worked on it, they had a bunch of problems with it. I guess you could say that's why the job never purchased another.

The engine does about 250 calls and the truck does about 80 calls.
