City island is nice if you avoid the tip, thats where all the rats congregate especially friday and saturday nights. and but any part of city island is nice i go fishing of the pier by the bridge and just relax for the day.

Once you go over the Bridge onto the Island it is like going to a small New England Town...especially some of the side streets by the water

To my knowledge they do not really leave the Island an definitely don't relocate.

no there are a few that do not relocate. there are some that are must fill houses also, meaning if the company is going to be out for more than 30min. they must have a relocator placed there.

I knew of the "must fill" houses, but never understood if it was due to geographic distance from second due companies and/or if it was due to call volume and fire duty. Any idea?



Also, with the recent attempts to close companies how did the Queens house with 2 Engine Co.'s and 1 Truck Co. manage to avoid closing one of the Engine Co.'s? Does their call volume justify the double companies or is for other reasons?

-Larry, I believe 70/53 on City Island is because how far 2nd due companies are from that location-and there is a fire load of old frames on the island.I was in awe that the truck was on the chopping block ! Like crossBronx said, thank goodness for the residents of CI for making their voices heard !!



- Mot sure on E264/328 L134, but the Rockaways have a unique area to protect as well.............



The FDNY Brothers can fill in more.

i think but not %100 sure those 2 engine companies in the same house in the rockaways have completely different first due assignments as one responds to the west and the other to the east.

Not to change the subject, but with earlier discussion of the ALF being a "lemon" and that's why it's where it is......what was the consensus of the Ferrara engine that was at 283?



I recall reading in one place or another that the guys liked it, but it wasn't holding up well. Don't know if that was truth, rumor, hearsay or what.

Same was true with the 1996 E\-One the Sity tested. Spoke to a deal in NJ that I know and they were not allowed to talk about it. I did hear the words CRACKS and WELDS used.

The Ferrara that was donated by the residents of Louisiana was another rig that didn't hold up well from what I was told. They took it back down to New Orleans when Katrina hit, and supposedly were gonna re-donate it back to Louisiana since N.O.F.D. lost some rigs. Heard that some people were offended that we were gonna give it back to them.

Trenton NJ I know broke EVERY Weld in their E\-One Hush Rescue... More then ONE TIME. I think also Newark had the same issues with some of their rigs... Every now and then this topic with truck problems (E-1, Pierce, KME, ALF) pops up.

I heard from Boston fire fighters that the E-1's held up OK. I wanted to know how the Aluminium Aerials held up.



Over all E-1 has few problems. Nothing worth mentioning unless we are talking for big city use.

I guess these trucks are not Heavy duty compaired to Seagrave.

I asked FDNY fire fighters if any problems were encountered with my favorite rig of all, the Sutphen towers.

I was told that there was none, but they stopped buying them because of specialized training and parts needed to keep them running.



I like reading about these fire apparatus manufacture issues.

No matter maker, they all have problems and all have their "lemon" horror stories from Pierce, to Seagrave. to E\-One, to KME, to Sutphen, etc...



Also, Pierce was in FDNY once before with rescue rigs in the 70's on Mack R chassis...FDNY then left them to go to Saulsbury if memory serves...so even Pierce was dismissed for another builder before.
