Former Kennebunkport, ME Ladder-4, 1948 Seagrave Quint. Served in Kennebunk in the late '70's through the 80's. Not sure where it is originally from. On the side of Rt 110 in Newfield, ME.

I hauled the Squad out of Ct and the St Charles piece from Chicago. I hope Jack does not mind me answering your question. Ed Friel died at Engine 34's station while Engine 27 was covering up on May 3rd, 1986. If memory serves me correct, they were running there 1984 Seagrave Invader.

Sure, there was an extra alarm fire somewhere out in southwest philly, I think and 27's wass covering 34's. There was a problem with the boiler and Eddie Friel knew the station because he was at 34's before he transfered to 27's.He went downstairs to take a look at it and there was a hugh explosion killing him. Also the company captain and another firemen were hurt so baddly they never came back to the job. I remember the tv news shots of the engine in the bay with someones running coat over the numbers on the front for privacy before families could be notified.The building itself suffered quite a bit of damage.Both Capt. Harris and FF Dennis Dougherty are OK now, I have seen them at company reunions and such. I was assigned to 27's from 1989 to 1996

Not doubting you since you are a former member of the company. But I grew up right over the Taconey-Palmyra Bridge and remember seeing on the news and in the papers a Mack engine parked in 34's bay when this happened. Glad to hear the Captain and other fireman recovered.

Lucked onto this one, In Milton, NH, former Milton, NH Fire & Rescue IHC (Unk year) / and a Grove (maybe?) 65ft aerial. I think they got this truck used from somewhere else, any ideas anyone?

The incident happened pretty much like Rotoray related. Engine 34 was one of the few five inch line companies at the time. They responded on the fourth alarm to 56th & Pascall and Engine 27 was sent to cover them. When Engine 34 was released from the fireground, they were advised by Deputy 1 (Pete Black) to stop at the first pay phone they found to call home to let their families know that they were alright. Chief Black figured that the news media would report the explosion but wouldn't mention that it was a cover-up company and not Engine 34 involved. The Mack that was seen on the news could have been a spare or a reserve piece that was stored in Engine 34's firehouse. Looks like a Farrar logo on the nose of the Milton ladder.
