This & That from Here & There

Dave, I'm curious, did you have to do much justification <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tisktisk.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tisktisk' /> on the Maryland Light Package? <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Love seeing the GA stuff.

To be honest, no. This one came fully equipped, plus some extra stuff that is now on other rigs. I was given a budget amount and all I had to do was stay below that amount, which I did by about $167. Admin didn't change the original spec at all. They plan to put another one in the 2010-2011 budget to replace Engine 2's Quantum. We should have it around May, 2011, just before I retire.

Justification wouldn't have been too difficult, even if I'd had to do it. We are in one of the highest traffic areas of the State and those lights were listed as "Traffic Clearing Lights". We have already have several positive comments on them and the guys who drive it have noticed a difference in the reaction of the traffic when they are responding. I'm even working on a proposal to upgrade Truck 1 and the Squad with the same package.

That's great, I continue to work on our committee chair for Roto-Rays on the Quantums, but it's an uphill battle thus far!

Since it's rare to get to ask a question of one who works on apparatus specs, I was wondering, since it seems that everyone around CNY is going with the LED lightbars, (which from this buff's viewpoint they are ugly when unlit) why did you choose the lightbar you did?

We have the same lightbar on two other apparatus, the former Engine 1 (1997) and Squad 3 (2001). We have never had any trouble with either one. We have a strobe bar on Engine 2 and have had both bulb and power supply issues. Truck 1 has LED bars on each side of the aerial which reflect off the back of the bucket and blind the driver! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Doh' />

There are LED warning lights on Engine 1, as well as halogen revolving lights.. I don't believe that any one type of light, nor any one color of light, is the answer. Each type has their strong points. Engine 1 has a variety of light types and colors, to be seen in a variety of conditions.

Last Saturday, I met up with Andrew and his buddy Aaron in Clarkesville, GA. We hit a number of stations in Habersham, Banks, and Franklin Counties, getting almost 30 rigs. I'll post some here and leave the rest for Andrew to post.
