I just heard again today that there are so many issues going on with the 2006 Spartan/Crimson TDA assigned to Ladder 1, that the second new Pierce TDA will most likely be the new Ladder 1.
I pity the tillerman on that rig. I doubt he can see much of anything. Almost looks as bad as the tillers that Pittsburgh had. Very nice looking ride though. Wish I lived alittle closer to Seattle. lol

Perhaps for better traction. If that is the reason SFD chose the tandem axle, it may be because Seattle's downtown streets are extremely steep, in addition the city had a serious problem with snow removal last winter.

What happened to the Spartan/Crimson at 1? Is it normal for 1 to replace their truck and had the older one down or are their issues?

Chief,
The 2006 Spartan Crimson went out of service as Ladder 1 on Dec 31, 2009. It then spent some time in the shops, after which it was reassigned as Ladder 11 at Station 32 in West Seattle, replacing the 1995 Simon Duplex rear mount rig. There seemed to be some nagging issues with the rig, but nothing specific had been mentioned, only rumors. Hopefully all of the issues have been resolved.
Did the old Duplex/LTI rig from L11 go to reserve?
Thanks in advance.

Larry,
Here's Ladder 11's former rig parked at SFD Head Quarters last week and serving as a reserve for Ladder 7. As of now, SFD is considering replacing their rear mounts with TDA's, through attrition and as space becomes available with new station construction. There is a rumor of a new Pierce delivery, which is scheduled to arrive in May.

I believe Ladder 7 runs the identical rig as the old L11 ...

The only visible difference is that Ladder 7's rig has "Brown" painted under the windshield in honor of one of the 4 firefighters killed in the Mary Pang fire.
According to the area Pierce dealership web site another Arrow-XT 100' TDA has been delivered to the Seattle Fire Department. It's listed as a June delivery, Job 22751, but apparently the company assignment has not yet been specified. If anyone knows the assignment please let us know. I believe the only stations that can accommodate this new truck where there is a need to replace a rear mount truck are 17's, 28's and 31's, where older rear mounts Ladders 9, 12, and 5 currently reside.
I made a correction to part of the statement above referring to older rear mount trucks in front line service. Sorry for the confusion.
Since the new Pierce Tandom Axial TDA is now in service and assigned to Ladder 9, it's former rig, the 1998 ALF Eagle Becker/AI 100' TDA, will spend some time in the shops, then it will be reassigned as Ladder 5. Another correction must be noted, 31's station is too short to house a new Pierce Tandom Axial TDA, by about 7 to 10 feet.
