Libertyville IL just did that too. From what I understand their theory was they only needed 75's but wanted 500 gallons of water.

Ok I got the answer. The reason for the tandem rear axles is because of the larger water tank.

You can get a 75' single-axle quint from Pierce with a 500 gallon tank. You can also get a 100' or 105' tandem-axle rearmount quint from Pierce with a 500 gallon tank. It just seems like a waste of a big truck to only have a 75' ladder.

Thats what my department is thinking as well with our '98 Lance tandem axle 75'. We are in the beginning stages of looking for a replacement, Pierce single axle 75 quint. The current quint is just too big for its capabilities.

I won't argue that point, but you give up a lot of maneuverability versus the same rig with a single axle. However, the point I was trying to make is that if you are going to buy a rig that is that large, go with the larger stick. Our State Fire Academy bought an E\-One Hurricane with tandem axles.....and an 80' ladder! It doesn't even have a pump or tank! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Banghead' /> I just don't get it.
