1993 Mack CF 1000gpm pumper
#1
Some of you are aware that back on September 21, 2009, I got myself a birthday present: a 1993 Mack CF685F pumper. I'll post some photos, and periodically update the progress on this.

I found out that the rig was for sale when it was posted by Warren Jenkins here on Firepics in early September. A couple of days later, I was able to get in contact with the department. On September 14, my dad and I made the 6-hour trip to meet the department members and test drive the rig. Based on that visit, we went back 7 days later and got her.

This is a 1993 Mack CF685F. The die-hards out there will know that the last CF's were built in 1992 and delivered to Yonkers. My rig was originally built in 1972, but when it was refurbished in 1992/1993, Maryland DMV re-titled it as a 1993 model. From 1972 to 2002, this rig was operated by the Landover Hills VFD in Prince George's County, MD, and from 2002-2009, the Tower Hill #2 VFD in Luzerne Twp, Fayette County, PA ran this as Engine 39-1.

To start off, just a couple of shots that I took today. You'll notice that I'm working on lettering removal on the driver's side first. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> When complete, the rig will represent Landover Hills again.

On the way home on to Virginia, we stopped for a little while near Winchester, VA to see my good friend Mike Sanders so he could get a couple of shots. These give you an idea of what the rig looked like when Tower Hill took it out of service.

Thanks to Tom Shand's meticulous record keeping, and the generosity of some PG county buffs, I can post some older photos.

First, a picture of the rig as delivered. Ran in this fashion from 1972 to 1982:

In 1982, the PG County shops refurbished the rig, resulting in a new paint scheme along with some other additions:

Then, 10 years later, LHVFD sent it to Delmarva, who's Beaverbilt section rebuilt the rig ground-up. This included:
  • New stainless steel body

  • Lengthened the frame approximately 14"

  • Enclosed the cab in a LFD fashion

  • Installed a new automatic transmission

  • Rebuilt the 237HP motor

  • Rebuilt the 1000 GPM Waterous 2-stage pump

  • Added the vertical exhaust stacks

  • Added additional flood lights

  • Added the strobes to the body and cab sides

  • Added air conditioning

This photo was taken post-refurb.

I was giving some technical advice at a Rural Water Supply class today, and a couple of the other instructors more-or-less begged me to go home and get my engine, which I happily did. We replaced the engine at the dump site with the Mack, which ended up pumping 1000gpm at draft for 2 hours, in addition to supplying the handlines transferring water between the three porta-ponds. This thing is insanely loud while pumping - hearing protection required from now on.

More to come as the project moves along! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Taylor,

Glad to see this went to a good home. Next time I'm down you'll have to get it out for photos, and a ride. You know how much of a diehard mack fan I am. lol. How long was the ride back down to Virginia?

Shoop, just let me know when and where - I have a very accomodating rate schedule depending on how far you want to ride around. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Lol' />

The ride really didn't take quite as long as I expected - around 7.5 hours. As you'd expect, the mountainous ride through western PA is what added a lot of time. Since the fuel was turned up, it puked the nastiest black smoke all the way up those long grades. Once we got back into MD and VA, it zipped right down the road with the rest of the traffic.

I expect I'll get an award for "Least Environmentally Friendly Fire Engine" rig at some point. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' />

Best wishes with your new "toy", Taylor. Posting that Mack got more reaction than anything else I've ever posted... <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Icon_crazy' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Banghead' />

I'm happy you were able to "make a deal".

Warren, I know what you mean. Sometimes it seems like the most insignificant posts garner the most attention.

Thanks for the well-wishes, I hope to have it on the road a lot next year for the parade season.

Roto-Ray,

I have been following this piece for sometime myself, and you got a nice rig!

I remember when it was first rehabbed by Delmarva, and then was sent down to Ocean City to be present for the Fireman's Convention. It sat outside to the left on the main convention doors (at that time)I remember being impressed by the work of Beaverbilt, and how good it looked with all the upgrade's, like the oversized tires on the front, additional warning/scene lights, and of course who could overlook the dual stacks. A bunch of us that were down that year waited in the parking lot to hear it get started up and run down the Coastal Highway.

One question. Throught the years, I noticed some pictures of it having a Roto-Ray. I assume that this was after Landover hills sold it?

Any plans to put that back on?

I know that you probably will never part with the CF, but please keep me in mind if you do.

Thanks

Congratulations on your new toy!!! Question on your truck: I have it as a 300-gallon tank when it was Water supply 30, was the tank ever up sized when Tower Hill got it or during the refurb?

Tech,

Since I have been driving it, I have noticed the same thing about people wanting to hear it. When I left the West Point parade a few weeks ago, it was pretty neat to see the number of firefighters that actually stopped and waited and watched me go by...I might have juiced it just a little bit for them...haha...

After Tower Hill took delivery of the rig, they did install a Roto-Ray on it. They wanted it to match the rescue they purchased from Hyattstown, MD. However, prior to me purchasing it, they took it off and sent it to 4-Guys to mount on the new rig that replaced the Mack.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance I'll put another one on it. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> All I need to do is save up the bucks!

I'll certainly keep you in mind if I ever have to part ways with her!

Thanks! As for the tank, Tower Hill told me they "believed" that a 500 tank was installed with the new body, but I haven't confirmed that yet. Research continues!

Taylor, it is beautiful!! I bet the other instructors had to "beg" you! You probably said, hey I have an old Mack at home that could do this without breaking a sweat!!!

Are you going to respond to calls in Powhatan with this ride??? I will have to come out and check her out.

All you have to do is put it on a scale with no water then fill it and put it back on with the water,I think its 8.2lbs per gallon? good luck with it, nothing like owning a Mack I have two !

There or about, gallon of fresh water weighs 8.333 pounds. So 4166.5 pounds equates to 500 gallons of fresh water. Ballpark figure would be 4200 pounds additional weight loaded with water.

Still a nice ride..

Also if the Gold colored Bulldog still means what it did at one time, it has a Mack Diesel engine in it.

Sure does have Bulldog power. 237hp Maxidyne that was rebuilt back in 1993. I'll see if I can get some video of her, both in the cab and outside too. I really wish I'd filmed it pumping the other day, lord have mercy.

I put my 60's era Powercall in it the other day, replacing the "modern" Code 3 siren that it had. It helps make noise too. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />
