Seems like 90% of the people I've met around railroad tracks have been involved in public safety in some way. And most all of the railfans I know are also firefighters.

I agree with you, still have my Christmas Lionel up and running. Maybe it's time I find a new name for the trains that will keep my wife from complaining about them.
Surprising photos with the tracks a little close to the parking aprons. Is there a railroad access path that would allow these apparatus to get up or down the tracks?

Along the same theme.....I had forgotten about this one. Last year, while in Roanoke, Virginia for business, I drove by an ambulance dealer and found this 2008 Ford E450/Wheeled Coach, from Clifton Forge, Virginia.
Clifton Forge has a lot of railroad heritage, and this one was a bit special for me because I have family generations ago that lived in Clifton Forge and worked for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, which is the engine depicted on the ambulance.

This is not the CSX or NS or UP or BNSF mainline, just a backcountry shortline that hauls 1 commodity; GLASS Sand, so no hazmat.
RR was built in 1918 to Gore, extended to Wardensville,WV in 1921 to haul out timber.Abandoned back to Gore by 1944 after timber played out. A sand/silica quarry became the main industry, there was only 1 train a WEEK until 1978, when the quarry was bought by Unisil,Inc., and the RR was upgraded to be capable of heavier loads/engines.
The VFC was built in 1957, obviously they were not concerned with the RR's 1 train/week then. The VFC has plans for a new station, but it will probably be on the almost 10 acres they own there.
The twice-daily trains are seldom more than 15-20 cars since 2 locos can only haul that many over the 3% grades on the line.

Reminds me of a similar setup years ago as a kid. Kings Park FD had a spur to the State hospital right through their parking lot. I remember one parade where the fair was stopped for a few minutes while a train to the hospital went through. Hospital is closed now, but the train in front of the firehouse brought back some good memories.

It is not often that I hear the train horns from the Winchester & Western on a weekend....even more rare on a Sunday. Today I heard the train crossing busy Route 50, making a bit of noise. I decided to head to Gainesboro Fire Station 16 in Frederick County. Like Round Hill FS 15 which started this thread, the Winchester & Western tracks pass right next to the fire station. Unlike Round Hill, they do not cross the front apron.
Here is a Gainesboro station photo taken at a different time when I photographed the FS 16 apparatus.
Sorry....forgot one. Just to put the W&W train sizes in perspective. This is the same train just prior to getting to Gainesboro. I believe it is taking a load of empty sand hoppers back to Gore, Virginia. Beautiful countryside.
