Well, I-287 was not finished until 1993 with a missing 20 mile gap in NJ between Montville and Mahwah from the early 1970's but it was open from I-80 to the NJ Turnpike in Edison all those years. So they could have gone NJ 17 south from the NY Thruway to I-80 and then I-287 south. Or maybe I saw it somewhere else as I was known to put 30,000 miles a year on my cars back then and only worked 1/4 mile from home.
