Grantsville VFD Station 60 The windows above the bay doors are actually apartments for rent to help off-set the cost of the firehouse.
Are you kidding me??!! That is the best set up I have seen, to rent an apartment above the firehouse... better than being a live in because you don't have to get up at 2 in the morning for the automatic fire alarm at St. Peters Apartments...but you can if you want and you are NOT going to miss a piece. I like it!! Fritz

Grantsville's 2 previous stations were on the ground level floor of a 3-story clothing factory, this started in the 1950's, prior to that GVFD was in a converted store on Main St. (US40).
GVFD was formed in 1928, and used a temporary garage until the late 1930's, when this store was converted. This shot is from the early 1950's, appears to be a WWII vintage Chevy inside. In the early 1980's, this store became a liquor store, the sliding bay door (and ramp) was used for deliveries. H. Marschalk photo, Jenkins collection
The 1st station in the factory(mid 1950's) had 3 single bays,GVFD's growth by the 1960's resulted in a step-van rescue being parked outside. By 1970, IIRC, the factory greatly expanded, and the vfd was moved to the eastern end of the new building. This gave the dept. 3 double bays, and the dept. doubled its fleet during the 1970's.

I bet that can make for long night for the residents of the apartments at times
I got the impression that the apartments were actually supposed to attract members, although I think it would be a great retirement option. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/BananaMan.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Fort Ritchie,MD. former fire station, vacated when base closed in 1998.
When photographed several years ago, station was being used as office space and maintenance depot by Pen Mar Development Corp.I don't believe this company is still involved with redevelopment of the base, which has had little success in 12 years. In a real waste of taxpayer $$$, the station was only used by the FD for about 3 years. Warren Jenkins photos

Rheems1,
I do understand that the new apparatus and Station are nice up there...especially the new ARFF unit. I guess we will all have to wait until they come away from the "hole" before we see any pictures!
Nice new photo of MD Fire Stations

In a real waste of taxpayer $$$, the station was only used by the FD for about 3 years.
The real shame was that the Army knew Ft. Ritchie was going to close, but built the station anyway. Ft.Meade had been trying for years to get a new station around that time and tried to get the funding diverted for a new station there instead, however the Army insisted that by doing so would be a misappropriation of funding. Ft. Meade even solicitaed help from Sen. "Babs" McCulsky, but she was unable to assist. Your tax dollars at work folks. The most terrifying phrase is "We're from your government, we're here to help".
I have 3 of their 6 units completed, including the crash truck. It is tough trying to get them, even when they come off the facility.
