Really sharp looking rig. we use to have an almost identical one here in Smithfield that was a 1947 i think. Have no idea were it is now, the last time i saw it was about 15 years ago and it was still in decent condition.

Had the day off so I ventured out a bit. Got lucky at my first stop but struck out finding someone at two others and the engine wouldn't start at another. Oh well, you take what you can get in this hobby. These were taken at Holly Grove VFD in Louisa Co, VA. You're liable to find a surprise rig whenever you roll up in there! Although no surprises were found today, I did learn of a heavy rescue they are in the process of purchasing.



First up is their rescue pumper....note Yosemite Sam holding the spreaders.

Here is the little brush truck with 50,000 lb winch.......they sometimes take it on structure calls if the extra water is needed.

Last one for now....odd they would call this Attack 4 and the previous monster Brush 4 :-) Holly Grove also has a tractor drawn 7000 gallon tanker that is at Slagle's having a 1250 GPM pump installed. I hope to get that and the new heavy rescue once they arrive.

I made a quick trip to Powhatan to shoot the apparatus at the Courthouse station last Friday. My only disappointment was fighting clouds. When I looked outside at 9:00 not a cloud could be found, but by the time I got into Powhatan, here they came! It was hard to get the rigs positioned exactly to my liking because we were constantly rushing to get shots before the next big cloud blocked out the sun. The apparatus here was very clean, even though my visit was unannounced. Many thanks to Ken Satterwhite for patiently moving the rigs around and to Chief Jeff Beach for supplying information.

This next rig has a bit of history. The chassis was purchased together with the chassis used for Brush 1, however, the body is from a 1980 Chevrolet squad formerly operated by Buckroe Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad in Hampton, VA. The body was re-chassied by Crenshaw Equipment in Richmond. Although it says "Squad 1" on the left fender, it goes by EMS-1 on the radio.

The final piece is sort of an all-purpose vehicle, can be used by the Chief, run errands or transport members to classes. It has a little EMS gear but is not licensed as such.

At one time this next rig was the primary engine at Fine Creek VFD Company 4, but is now a County Reserve Engine. As part of an arrangement, it splits time being housed at Company 4 and Company 1, alternating monthly. It's lettered as "Engine 43", but I'll defer to Roto-Ray to explain the old numbering system used in Powhatan. It's currently called "Wagon 4", and possibly "Wagon 1" if Company 1 personnel were to staff it as a second engine.

Paul, nice photos.



The reserve engine was the delivered in 1985 to the Fine Creek VFD, Company 4, and was the second (and last) Ford C operated by the county. As can still be seen, it was designated Engine 43. At that time, the county was using a numbering scheme very similar to what neighboring Chesterfield County was using at the time. The first digit was the company number, and anything ending in 2, 3, or 4 was an engine. Later, the rigs were simply designated Engine 4, Tanker 2, etc. Very few of them were re-lettered although the radio designation changed.



The rig is in really good shape, but the Cat 3208 under the hood is ridiculously worn out, causing it to be terribly underpowered.



Engine 43/Engine 4 was replaced in 2002 by a Pierce Enforcer pumper, and became the county reserve engine. Anytime it's not replacing another engine in the county, it carries the designation "wagon" and the county from which it's responding.



When my company (Company 2 [Huguenot VFD]) gets our new engine next year, our 1990 Grumman will become the county reserve and this 1985 Ford C/Pierce will be disposed of.
