It's a manifold. SFD's SOP was to drop that in front of a building and then reverse to a hydrant. I'm not sure if that's how they do it anymore or what. I have a series of pics that my dad took at a fire in 1992 that show them doing it -- I'll try to get them scanned and posted soon.
There was nothing like those KWs when they were in service. I went to law school at Seattle University from 1999-2002 and quite a few of them were still around as reserves while I was living in the city. Loudest rigs I've ever heard.
