Independence was just as busy as Kansas City. The western edge of Independence reflects the east side of Kansas City very rough with lots of fire duty. Sadly this Engine started the short lived turn to chrome yellow by the IFD. Engine 1 was later refurbished in 1986 by Pierce and painted solid Candy Apple RED with a Federal Q2b added. It was then assigned to Pumper 4 in the late 1980's. It was hit by a train in 1995ish while at Pumper 4 and landed on its side. Once again it was refurbished in a new color of White over Vermilion Red and the Q siren was removed by the shops. This rig served in reserve in to the early 2000's when it was disposed of. It was the last Seagrave on the roster for IFD and lead a colorful career. All Independence units have been RED since the mid 1980's, the chrome yellow was short lived.
Independence was primarily a Seagrave Customer. Where Kansas City, Missouri alternated between Seagrave and American LaFrance.
