In South Florida, we call our Medic units "Rescues" because most departments do not have a dedicated Heavy Rescue team. All personnel who ride medic units in SoFla are trained firefighters. All medic units also carry SCBA and tools. Depending on the department, these medic units can also carry saws, hooks, etc. On a fire, the medic unit and its personnel typically are tasked with performing truck work. In my department, the first in Rescue will perform a search and secure utilities. Once these are done, we can assist the engines or begin to overhaul. This is why we don't call them Medics, but Rescues.
