I understand your thinking but it's a little different then you describe.
There is a huge difference between a tandem rear axle and two (2) single rear axles. The tandem axle/suspension is a complete assembly that allows the two axles to work in conjunction with each other.
To simply add an additional axle would not work out so well.
One advantage of the tandem is that the truck now has a shorter wheelbase <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
