I'm not sure exactly how to do it on a Mac, but all photos need to be <200k in size. I generally use 1024x768 resolution at 72dpi. That creates a decent sized photo for viewing, but also keeps the file size low. I use Paint.net to edit and resize. It's free and may even have a Mac version. The most important thing is to keep the file size down.
