Showing up one hour early is on time. Showing up on time is late. Showing up late is unforgivable.
Make sure you show up your first day loaded with pastries, cakes, pies, etc. Oh and Ice Cream. God forbid you forget ice cream.
-Eyes and ears open, mouth closed.
-Last to sit down to a meal, first one up and in the sink doing the dishes.
-Leave your cell phone in your car, locker, wherever.....ANYPLACE but in your hands or on your belt (unless you are required to carry it as a Medic for hospital communication....) Tell your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, mom, kids, whoever/whatever not to call you your first couple of weeks, yer gonna be too busy to talk to them.
-Stay out of the TV/Rec Room unless specifically invited by a senior member (like on Sundays or Holidays.) You should be doing the following: Cleaning the station, cleaning the rigs, cleaning the tools on the rigs, cleaning the compartments on the rigs, learning the rigs, learning the compartments on the rigs, learning the equipment on the rigs......Studying your local, studying your Department's SOP's and SOG's, studying your Paramedical Crap.......Anything but watching a TV, talking or texting on your phone, playing an x-box, etc etc etc......GET IT?
Learn who the senior man is on your shift. If you have any questions, go to him.
You cook? Good, Thats nice. You make sure you find out who normally cooks first- one good way to piss off a senior guy who is the regular cook is to upstage his show. Save your abilities for when he is off or if cooking rotates among everyone like it does in some houses.
