I'm 99.9% positive that the FDNY spec calls for stainless steel bodies.  I know the cabs are stainless steel.

 

I do find it humorous that you think that the FDNY "missed this detail" (even though they didn't), given the level of expertise for their apparatus committee and the volume of apparatus they acquire and that you think "cost is a big deal" given what they pay for their apparatus.

 

Not washing the truck every time you return to the station is not the sole source for rust on apparatus. 

 

 

Again the photo shows they did miss the detail.
