As some of you know, I took on a different job with my company which requires me to travel throughout Virginia and West Virginia. It also gives me the opportunity to do some "quick" visits of fire departments that I have never visited or seen. I usually plan my visits and photographs around some decent weather. With these visits, I basically take what I can get because I am not real sure if or when I will return to the area. It has been a lot of fun.
This past week, I had a three day work visit planned in the Southwest part of Virginia (Virginia/Kentucky area). I had no real plans on specific stations to visit, just whatever was closest to the business meetings I had throughout the day. When I could stop to visit departments, they were usually quick stops. The other real challenge was just finding folks at these stations. During this week, I hit some weird weather - mainly overcast with some bursts of sun and showers. Also had some heavy fog in the mornings around the mountains. Some strong storms also. I will say this - the folks in SW Virginia were some of the most friendly people I have met. Very accomodating, especially when I had little time before I had to hit the road. I saw first hand southern hospitality. Most of the station stops occurred in the later part of the afternoon.
I will start off with a few trucks on my way down to SW Virginia.
I stopped by the Augusta County FD just off I81 between Harrisonburg and Roanoke wondering if their new American LaFrance heavy squad had arrived. It had not. Their older 1986 International/Swab is still performing squad duties.
