9's engine was nearly totaled shortly after it entered service after delivery from the factory. While blocking traffic on the freeway, an "impaired" driver ran into the rear of 9's engine while traveling at "freeway" speed. All four of the firefighters onboard EN09 were injured and the driver of the other vehicle was killed. The vehicle that struck EN09 pushed the entire rear body of the apparatus atop the rear wheels. After it was struck, the injured firefighters from EN09 jumped out and rendered aid to the motorist who struck them. Interestingly enough, EN09 was still able to pump and operate until help arrived.
EN09 was sent back to the factory and the entire body from the pump panel back was replaced. It was out of service for several months before it was returned to 9's.
Had EN09 not been blocking traffic that night for another engine and ambulance, there would have undoubtedly been several severely injured and/or dead firefighters.
