I shoot with a Nikon D3 and Nikon lenses, I always use manual settings, day and night,  as I leave nothing up to the camera settings to screw up.  For this fire I shot between 800 and 1600 with an occasional 3200 ISO knowing that I get virtually no noise out of the camera from that range.  This allows you to use a slower aperture speed say 1/30 or 1/15 with your fstops and still hand hold the camera and use no flash.  Keep in mind if someone is moving fast you will get a blur, but thats the trade off.  Theses digital cameras are amazing, I encourage anyone to get to know your camera personally and photography techniques to see what it can do. Lastly, check out others sites and look in their exif and see what they shot at as well.
