Working Fire North Smithfield, RI 580 Black Plain Rd January 18, 2013
#1

North Smithfield, RI ~ An observant neighbor called 911 reporting that his neighbor’s house at 580 Black Plain Road might be on fire. Engine 1, Tanker 1, and out of town apparatus responded to the address to investigate. North Smithfield Fire Chief Joel Jillson arrived first and reported that he had smoke pushing from the eaves of a single-family dwelling and that he was in command.

The OIC reported that he had a working fire in the Charlie/Delta corner and also needed a tanker task force to the scene due to the lack of hydrants in this section of the town. Engine 1’s crew stretched off a 1 ¾” attack line to the Delta side to begin fire attack. Tanker 1 feed its 3000-gallon water load to Engine 1 by LDH feeder line.

A second line was stretched in through the front door to cut off the flame spread.  Heavy smoke and fire was now venting from the roof and gable end of a family room. An aggressive interior attack commenced while mutual aide continued to the scene. The bulk of the fire appeared to the in the area of the woodstove in the family room.

Woonsocket Fire sent Engine 3 and Ladder 2 along with tankers from Burrillville, Blackstone, MA, Millville, MA, and Uxbridge, MA for water supply. Woonsocket Engine 3’s crew stretched another line to the Charlie side to attack the fire on the exterior sidewall and the basement from drop down fire under the wood stove in the family room.

The interior attack was showing signs of knock down as the smoke began to lighten up. The fire appeared to have extended from the cathedral ceiling family room into the main dwelling. Smoke was starting to show from the eaves and attic vents along the main section of the house. Extensive overhaul was required to stop the spread of the fire.

The fire was placed under control in about 45 minutes. The dwelling was unoccupied at the time of the fire as the homeowners were at work. The bulk of the fire appeared to be in the area of the wood stove but there has been no official cause as of this writing.
