Quote:Nope One Airport with ALOT of names!Well said! ATL has had many names over the years. It opened in 1926 as Candler Field, named for Coca-Cola tycoon and former Atlanta Mayor Asa Candler. During WWII, it was primarily operated by the military and named Atlanta Army Airfield. The name was changed to Atlanta Municipal Airport in 1946. After much redesign and expansion in the late 1970's, it was renamed William B. Hartsfield International Airport in 1980, after another former Atlanta mayor who was instrumental in the growth of the airport after the war. The mayor during that time was Maynard Jackson and upon his passing in 2003, the name was again changed to the current official name of Hartsfield - Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The locals use numerous variations of those names.
There are other airfields in Metro Atlanta, but Hartsfield - Jackson is the only one with commercial passenger flights. The rest are used by private and corporate aircraft or the military and are called by their names:
"PDK" - Peachtree DeKalb Airport
"Charlie Brown" - Fulton County Airport
"Dobbins" - Dobbins Air Reserve Base/Lockheed Aircraft
"McCollum" - McCollum Field/Cobb County Airport
