Changeable Unit/Rig Numbers
#2
For many years, the Syracuse Fire Department has used a simple aluminum channel frame in the shape of a square "U" on the doors of apparatus used as spares. Each station is assigned a set of numbers on aluminum blanks for their station which simply slide into the frame. These numbered blanks stay at the station. Whenever a spare shows up, the guys simply drop their number into the door slot, and they're all set. It's quick, economical to do, and there's no reason why it couldn't be expanded to every rig in the fleet if desired. Renumbering any rig to your station would only take seconds. You could paint the aluminum blanks to match your apparatus color to make it a bit more aesthetically pleasing, and do the numbers in whatever font and color you use now.Just a suggestion.

There are numerous photos of SFD Spare & Recall Apparatus on Fire Photographer John Kanealy's excellent CNYfiretrucks web site. They show the aluminum frame I'm talking about on the rear doors, and also the fact that the spares are individually identified by smaller lettering on the tops of the front cab doors so you know at a glance who's using what.

It works for us.
