Newark, Delaware owned this 1982 ALF Century. 1250 pump, 750 water. One of only 2 built that year without an automatic transmission. It had a 6-71 Detroit, 5 speed manual. I don't know about the gearing, but it was assigned to Station 7 (ENG 7-4). The ramp from the station sloped down to give the engine a rolling head start. It would accelerate from 0-60 somewhere during the coarse of any response.
It was also built with Japanese steel. After about 3 years, you could go into the station in the middle of the night and hear pieces falling off of it. In 1987 it was sent to Dunmore, PA to have the rust repaired. It had stainless panels installed on the cab, and a new hose body, also stainless. By the time the unit was retired in the mid to late 90's, the doors were rusting off again. When we got to Dunmore, the plant engineer asked us if we drank the same water we washed the truck with. On parts of the doors, what you saw from the inside was the primer from the outside. What a rust bucket.
