On Saturday, September 12th, The Silent One and I met up at the Headquarters fire station in Sumter, SC. My attempts to research this department revealed little other than some station addresses. The department is unusual in that it is two departments operated under one administration. The city has five stations that are named instead of numbered. They are career staffed, running apparatus that are not numbered by their station assignment. There are also sixteen Volunteer stations in the county, with some of them staffed with one FF on certain weekdays. Which of them are staffed and which days of the week they are staffed varies from week to week. The plan was to hit all five career stations and find out which Volunteer stations were being manned that day. Things did not go according to my plan! First, one of the career stations is closed for remodeling, their pumper quartered at another station. Then, the Lieutenant at Headquarters would not let the FF's pull the rigs outside for us. None of the Volunteer stations were staffed that day. We did what we could and moved on towards Myrtle Beach, deciding to return on a weekday when that Lieutenant would not be on shift. Incidentally, they work a 48/96 shift.
