Engine 54 no longer exists, it is officially the Fire Brigade, and is stationed with Ladder 31, which is not staffed, at the station on Long Island on the property of the Long Island Hospital, which is now pretty much homeless shelters, drug rehabs and other various "hug the homeless" programs that the Public Health Commission has come up with to waste money, but there is a significant number of buildings out there, which justifies having the rig out there. Ladder 31, a Maxim S model MMA is out there because the bridge that connects Moon Island and Long Island has severe weight restrictions on it, so if there is a fire, Ladder 6, the first due truck, goes to Moon Island, hops in a van to go over the bridge and mans ladder 31.
As far as the brush trucks go, there are a few thousand acres of woods in the Stony Brook Reservation, and Engines 48 and 55 are on opposite sides, which makes for easiest access.
Thanks for the confirmation. When I first started to apark in Boston, there was no bridge. Engine 54 had a new (1948 vintage) Ward and I think that Ladder 31 had an early 30s city service. They had been delivered to the island by a barge. The firefighters worked 48 hours straight, then had five days off because the had to take a ferry from downtown.
