I know it's a little late, but I was perusing through the topic and it cuaght my eye. Recently we did a story at the California Youth Athourity in Camarillo and interviewed a number of girls that were on the fire crews. At least with CYA, which staffs crews for CDF/Cal Fire, they explained to us that you were only eligible for the fire crew in the last two years of your sentence, and you had to have had a spotless record "inside" and maintain that spotless record while on the crew. One of the gals we interview, and she was a rather pretty gal, someone you never would think would be in jail, was in for murder (At age 13 none the less) and she was on the fire crew. There were a number of girls on the crew that were in for murder, ADW, viloent crimes.
