I was in Newport News this week for a meeting and found that I was right down the street from Station 6, which houses an unusual HAZMAT unit that I have been trying to track down and photograph.
This is a busy house. I had been by the station three prior times and it was empty, except the HAZMAT sitting in the station. This week I dropped by again, and no one was home. Just as I was leaving a medic unit that was transferred to the station pulled up, but unfortunately, they could not move the HAZMAT out. Just as I was leaving another crew came back - I finally found my driver.
HAZMAT 1 is a 2004 Pierce Lance with a trailer also built by Pierce. I was told that Newport News ended up getting this truck because the military cancelled an order and Newport News was able to purchase it. It has Pierce job number 14972.
