Fire protection for Byberry was provided by the city. On 3/24/1937 Extra Engine 49
was organized on the grounds of the hospital. The company was solely responsible for protection of the buildings on the hospital grounds and did not respond off site. They were disbanded on 7/28/1951. Today, the box for Byberry is the only box in the city that gets five engines on the first alarm instead of the normal four. The fifth engine is a pipeline company (Pipeline 52 on the box card) that is used only for water supply.
