Lots of awesome shots here...and had to comment on this historically speaking...Both railroad and music history at that.
Spencer NC was the never reached destination for Southern RRs Fast Mail, train # 97 which missed a curve at speed at Stillhouse Trestle, across Cherrystone Creek in Danville Va. This occurred on Sept 27, 1903.
The wreck, of course, inspired the balllad that became the first million selling Country hit...The Wreck of the Old 97
The first line of the ballad starts...
"Well, they handed him his orders in Monroe, Virginia, saying, 'Steve, you're way behind time; this is not 38 it is Old 97, you must put her into Spencer on time.'"
Thought that was an interesting little factoid!
