WLF Serial Number P-8-001 was built for the Air Force in 1978 as a prototype diesel-powered combination structural and brush pumper. The Classification A/S-32P-8 indicates that the apparatus will pump 500 GPM, carry 600 gallons of water and 55 gallons of foam, and have 4 wheel drive. Previous P-8's were gasoline powered and based on Ford C-Series chassis. The prototype P-8 was delivered along with a Ward LaFrance Patriot P-12D prototype (2 wheel drive, 750 GPM) as "First Article Test" vehicles, but only the P-12D was produced in quantity (about 60).
P-8-001 was retired from the Air Force around 1991 and served the Georgia Department of Corrections at the Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, GA until around 2000. At that time, it became the property of the Fire Department in Subligna, GA. Subligna retired it in 2005, selling it to a truck repair shop in Dalton, GA. Today, P-8-001 became mine.
