Los Angeles Fire Dept
OK can anyone help me out and tell me what the yellow LAFD Seagrave's is for?

Is it for the airport? The truck was delivered on 1/19/08 Sales Order 78E47

There are a few changes from what looks like the traditional LAFD pumpers.

It's equipped with a 500 gallon tank 50 gallons foam and a 1750 GPM pump.

BTW: The rear has blue & yellow chevrons.

The order clearly states Cit of Los Angles, CA

I also thought it was odd for it to be a one truck order placed in June of 2007.

BTW: Does anyone have PICS of this rig, all I saw were not very good and quite small.

Here's my question though. Why doesn't the L.A.F.D. lean one way or the other when it comes to Pierce/Seagrave? Seems like they constantly order a "split" batch.[/quote]

Kyle,

I know it's been awhile but since no one else has stepped in I will.

With a fleet as big as LAFD's it makes sense for several reasons. One it makes sure both mfg's give you the best price and best service to try and keep them from going to a one mfg deal.

This protects the department also god forbid one of the mfg's goes out of business. I know that seems like a long shot with Pierce & Seagraves but American LaFrance was once the biggest mfg in the business and now they are on their death bed! Trying to get parts for a truck that is no longer made can be very troublesome for a department. I know of a local department that traveled over a thousand miles just to buy a windshield for their rig that is no longer made!

So really it comes down to keeping the mfg's honest price wise, service wise, and just being smart and looking at the future.

I will all but guarantee you that it is for LAX or Van Nuys A/P. All pumpers assigned there have been yellow for years. It has been along time since I lived in the LA area, so I am not 100% sure they still have yellow rigs out at Van Nuys A/P, but I would assume as much.

Kris,

The rig is for LAX. FS 51 to be exact. The fire shops are busy handing out the last of the Pierces now. They will then deliver the Seagrave engines. Unknown as to when 51's will get theirs.

Another thing is that E51 has the new style body with the full height compartments with roll ups on both sides.

LA City is in the process of taking delivery of a LARGE order of new RAs from Wheeled Coach (Rescue Ambulances for you non-left coast folks <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' /> ). This picture was posted on FLICKR, credit to the photographer but I forgot to note his/her name. Picture was taken on I-10 in west Texas.

I also asked on of my contacts at the Wheeled Coach plant to snag me a couple pictures which he did a few days ago, however, they're arn't great (I do appreciate his effort however). These are 2008 Ford E450s by the way. You'll notice the LA City spec'd "low headroom" modular bodies.

From what I heard, the last batch that came in did not have them, so I guess they got rid of them. They were replaced with a air horn or a different siren.

I never understood why they didn't put B&M's on them instead of the sick puppies. Nothing like "Super Chief!"

Might have been low bid or (from the advertising) the Timerwolf drew less amps. Funny thing is that B&M and Timberwolf are both located in California and the LAFD has in the past used local vendors products in their apparatus. Well though, I think the Q2B is king now as the new Seagraves that are coming in have the Q instead of the Timberwolf.

Word.

If B&M had the production capability, I would love to be their marketing manager and make them the new standard. Their sirens are definitely superior...the Q is great, but, I think the emergency response field needs to know there are electomechanical siren choices other than the "TiN"berwolf/Screaming Eagle grinders.

Is this still in service? Is it really what it appears to be, a roach coach???

Pierce does still offer plant tours, they just need to be set up with your sales rep beforehand. It is a matter of making sure someone can take the time to help you and making sure that it is not taking someone away from their work.

I can not see the rig on my cell here, but if it is an early 60's model Ford or Chevy, it is a former "Food Service" rig. They had at least 2 of them. One at 10's, downtown and the other at 60's in the valley.
