It's VERY hard to justify 20 aerial ladders in 20 stations when virtually no other city in the country (save for St. Louis to a certain extent) is doing the same. It's also VERY hard to justify 2 front line pieces for every company. Most in the department would agree we could do very well with a mix of quints and traditional engine companies. What ever route we go with though, we will still need some quints. The 4 current 105' Pierce's are in ROUGH shape and are becoming a major maintenance issue and will need to be replaced. The 3 Rescue's are also well past their useful life span. I can't remember the exact figure but our apparatus maint. budget is well over $1 million a year now and we are struggling to keep rigs in service every day. Hopefully we will have the bid advertised soon.
