The following photos show the Hutchinson, Kansas Fire Department in 1993. This is prior to adsorbing Reno County Fire District Two. This is also prior to the Quint Squad concept that as of 2011 was abandoned in favor of the fire ground proven Truck Engine concept. In the photos Truck Companies responded from Fire House 1 and Fire House 4 and were referred to as Ladders. All Fire Houses housed Engine Companies. The Reserve not pictured was a American LaFrance Century Series delivered lime green and later painted White over Red. It is currently owned by Hutchinson Firefighters IAFF Local 179 and is stored in Old Fire House 6. It is used for parades and other activities. Photos are credited courtesy of Hutchinson Firefighters IAFF Local 179.

Inside Fire House One three brass slide poles. Reserve Engine 1 pulling out for the photo shoot. Man I love old Fire Houses, everything has its special place so it fits just right and brass slide poles you can see your reflection in. The ceramic tile walls, Gamewell Gong, Hand painted Sparky the fire dog, gear hung on the wall, and riding assignment board. Tradition, Honor, and Pride Classic!!!

Tonight as you sprinkle salt on your dinner it came from Morton Salt in South Hutchinson, Kansas. Protecting this area is the outstanding South Hutchinson Volunteer Fire Department.

The Hutchinson area is home to massive salt mines. Once the mines are emptied the climate makes it a good place to store valuable documents and collectibles. Also many of the mines are turned in the natural gas storage wells due to the large natural gas production in the McPherson, Kansas Area.

City of Hutchinson, Kansas Fire Department

Hutchinson, Kansas Fire Department is fully career and since the early 1900's operated four fire houses with a fifth added in the 1950's. They originally operated five engines, two trucks, and one chief. In the Mid-1990's the trucks were disbanded in favor of a quint and two squads with Ladder One only making commercial fires. In 2001 Reno County Fire District Two also fully career was adsorbed by Hutchinson creating fire house six and seven. This was also the first time Hutchinson long standing career department was responsible for rural firefighting. With this added responsibility all new Engine's are equipped with 1000 gallon tanks in the future as the Smeal/Internationals are phased out the Custom Engines can be relocated. 2011 Hutchinson began returning to a Truck and Engine concept. Quint One is now booked in on all fires in the city and target hazards in the old Reno County Fire District Two area. Squad One was removed from service last month. Future Plans call for removing Squad Four from service creating permanent staffing for Truck Four and eventually adding an Engine with Quint One. See good things can happen. Refreshing to see more quints removed from duel roll service.

Forgot to mention Hutchinson Firefighters Local 179 uses the slogan "Salt City Firefighters" on the union T-Shirts. Due to the Morton Salt Company and the many salt mines under the city.

Most likely on loan from the Kansas State Division of Forestry. There are many of these Kaiser-Jeeps across Kansas. This one is in very good condition and a nice color close to American LaFrance Red with LED warning lights.

A very nice Engine and a big purchase for a small town. The secret to this photo is the rear high side door on the drivers side is missing. Accidentally removed a few weeks ago by the tender.
