One queston. How are they supposed to cross the sidewalk to respond on a call? The sidewalk looks like it's at quite an angle.[/quote]

Here's Ladder 1 going over the hump.

My immediate first thought on this rig was that it looks like the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree of Fire Engines. Poor thing.

Seems like maybe a bit more front bumper on all of the rigs would be a good idea! Surprised they are so short. Good looking fleet though.

Seattle definitely has some interesting looking rigs... It seems as if they resemble many of the urban Canadian departments. Not a knock at all, they just appear different than many other urban American departments. Any one else?

Take care

Yeah, it's odd. I moved here back in '89. Way back then, SFD had Battalion 1, which was actually a deputy chief. Battalion 1 also had a driver. All other BCs in the city are solo and don't have drivers. Battalion 1 had its own first due district as a BC but also ran citywide to all fires and took command. B1 was quartered at Station 10, so their first due district was essentially downtown.

At some point (I think after the Mary Pang fire), Battalion 1 was disbanded and the department created Safety 2, which is a BC that is a dedicated Safety Officer and responds to anything major. The deputy chief became a position that wasn't staffed 24/7. When Battalion 1 was disbanded, they created Staff 10, which was Battalion 1's former driver. I think that their job responsibilities are basically to coordinate daily on duty staffing and OT throughout the city and to respond to any major incident and act as a staff assistant for the IC, but I'm not entirely sure.

I think that SFD has a 40 hour deputy chief that responds from home for after hours fires, but they may have also since brought that position back up to 24/7. Hope this helps explain things.

Here's a shot of the Engine 5. A 2008 E\-One Quest, SFD shop number 85433, E-1 134503, just went into service on Tuesday, March 24.

Well Seattle is home to the Space Needle, now it's home the the Space Fire Engine! Seriously though, sharp looking rig. I always liked the all red paint with the gold striping.

Those rear view mirrors appear like two aliens. It's really sharp looking, but I think a beefier bumper would go a long way.
